IMPACT
Colleagues and Friends,
What a year! Like everyone, we suddenly found ourselves in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and faced challenges unprecedented in our Foundation’s history. The Foundation’s core mission is to create opportunities for members of the firm to get out into our communities in person and develop relationships in the process of serving others. Almost without warning, we were unable to lead and take part in events that have been the cornerstone of our community service and community building for 22 years.
Unsurprisingly, our volunteers did not shy from this challenge. Instead, they adapted, developing new and creative projects to care for those newly in need and found ways to support our existing projects in this new world we live in. For the second year, we hosted our firmwide summer school supply drive, donating supplies and monetary contributions to help hundreds of students adjust to a new way of learning. Our volunteers also hosted numerous food drives throughout the year, provided supplies to older adult centers and shelters, and found ways to get outside to support our communities in a variety of ways. In this year when continuing to support students’ learning was critical, we were pleased to award our Mississippi Project scholarships to three deserving educators.
The pandemic brought challenges, but it also brought us a renewed perspective and strength. We were honored to serve our communities in new and different ways this year, and we look forward to connecting and serving in the years to come!

In 2002, Louise Artibello, a secretary at Holland & Hart, was listening to NPR when she heard a story that inspired her to take action. The story was about “LaLee’s Kin,” a documentary film by Susan Froemke, Deborah Dickson and Albert Maysles, filmed in West Tallahatchie, Mississippi. The documentary profiled Laura Lee Wallace, a woman raising her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the West Tallahatchie School District (the poorest school district in the United States at the time). Artibello spread the word to the attorneys and staff of Holland & Hart and its Foundation, who were moved to act. After an initial in-person donation of books, school supplies, clothes, and other items, the firm committed to a ten-year scholarship program to recognize each year one exceptional student, one exceptional teacher, and one exceptional teacher’s assistant. A decade later, the Board of Directors voted to extend the program. The 2020 recipients are Libya Evans, Shelia Outlaw, and Wynde Bailey.

Supporting the Hungry
In 2020, individuals and families faced ongoing challenges due to the pandemic and needed food and supplies more than ever before. Our Foundation responded, going above and beyond, collecting cash and donating food to support the increased demands on food banks and charities in our local communities. We also continued to deliver meals through food service programs to older adults and families in need.

The Foundation is involved in many projects and activities throughout our communities during the holidays to help those less fortunate. The 2020 holiday season was challenging for many older adults and individuals in shelters who faced celebrating the holidays alone because of social distancing. To help raise spirits and bring joy to these individuals, the Foundation provided holiday bags to older adults, gift cards to homeless or vulnerable youth, sponsored families in need, and supported giving tree programs. With the safety restrictions required by the pandemic, the annual "Samta" visit (our own Sam Guyton) with children went virtual in 2020! We expanded the in-person event usually held in Denver to a firmwide initiative and Samta was able to meet virtually with 41 children.

Supporting Neighborhood Communities
We supported many projects and activities in our local communities, taking advantage of the outdoors to gather groups of masked volunteers. Our projects included neighborhood cleanup initiatives, celebrating the holidays with schools for at-risk children, participating in activities benefiting developing student athletes, donating laptops to community college students, and more. Our Foundation volunteers banded together to get the job done, bring smiles to faces, and help individuals reach their goals and dreams.

Supporting Older Adults and Shelters
The pandemic significantly impacted many of the most vulnerable in our local communities, creating additional strain on local shelters, older adult centers, and even local animal shelters trying to meet ever-growing needs. Many individuals, families, and even our four-legged friends received support through friendly letters, gift bags, food, and other needed supplies, and cash donations thanks to the generosity of Foundation volunteers.

Each year the Foundation office committees collaborate on one initiative that supports all of our communities. In 2020, the Foundation held its second annual firmwide school supply drive to help support the needs of students of all ages as identified by schools and partners in our local communities. Back-to-school supply drives operated a little differently in 2020 with adjusted routines for in-person learning and the increased need for remote-learning supplies. Several of our offices worked with a local school or organization to provide back-to-school supplies for students. Thank you to everyone for your contributions–you helped to bring joy and learning to those in need.

The Holland & Hart Foundation carries on Holland & Hart’s longstanding tradition of community service. The firm’s attorneys and staff members believe in giving back to the community, not just through financial contributions, but also through contributing time and effort. While other law firms have established grant-making foundations, only a handful focus principally on volunteerism and building community.
Launched in 1998 by Holland & Hart retired partner Sam Guyton, and his wife Jean, the Holland & Hart Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization with three primary goals:
• Create opportunities for individual and group volunteerism at Holland & Hart
• Foster a greater sense of community among the attorneys and staff of Holland & Hart
• Support the local and broader communities in which Holland & Hart practices professionally
To achieve these goals, Holland & Hart attorneys, staff, friends, families, and clients support programs and participate in volunteer-driven community events organized by the Foundation’s board and office committees.
