serving our communities
Holland & Hart foundation
the vision
Colleagues and Friends,
We want to begin by saying “Thank You!” As co-presidents of the Holland & Hart Foundation, we had the pleasure and privilege of observing and hearing about the Foundation’s incredible community impact in 2022. The initiatives and projects the Foundation supported couldn’t have happened without the dedication of our committees, volunteers, and long-term community partners. By helping others and making a difference, our members are grateful to be part of a meaningful foundation that provides opportunities for us to serve alongside familiar and new neighborhood nonprofits, community organizations, and colleagues.
Throughout this report, we highlight several inspiring initiatives accomplished in 2022 through meaningful partnerships that represent the Foundation's exponential impact of community collaboration and working together.
The Foundation champions the importance of giving back to our communities by contributing time and talent—transforming generosity into impact. We honor this value as we continue to identify the evolving needs of our communities and provide support through meaningful connections and service.
In 2023, the Foundation will celebrate its 25th Anniversary achieving its goals, supporting programs, and participating in volunteer-driven community initiatives. We look forward to commemorating your ongoing support and the journey ahead.
To achieve these goals, Holland & Hart attorneys, staff, friends, families, and clients support programs and participate in volunteer-driven community events organized by the Foundation’s office committees and board.
We started the Foundation with the basic idea to bond with our colleagues and serve our communities. The Foundation’s extraordinary success has been possible because firm leaders had the foresight to realize the importance and potential of the Foundation.
Jean Guyton, Co-Founder
Founded in 1998
“
“We acknowledge a special obligation to our communities, and we actively seek and undertake opportunities for giving our skills, time, and talents to pro bono and public service activities.”
“
“
The Foundation is dedicated to building community and connections inside and outside the firm. As the first of its kind and a model for other firms, this unique institution enables and empowers Holland & Hart volunteers to make worthwhile contributions to the community and to get to know each other in the process.
Working together on Foundation projects facilitates relationship building among colleagues across the firm, allowing people to know each other beyond work and connect with people in other offices. Linking the entire firm together, alumni, family members, and friends also can be active in the Foundation and participate in projects that positively impact their communities.
Since the Foundation's beginning, we have seen how even small acts of kindness ripple out and make a big difference in our communities.
Sam Guyton
Making Connections and Impact
Internal Impact
The Holland & Hart Foundation (Foundation) acts as the “heart” of the firm and carries on the firm's longstanding tradition of community service.
Launched by Sam (retired partner) and Jean Guyton, the Foundation is one of only a handful of law firm foundations focused principally on volunteerism and building community. The Foundation's primary goals are to create opportunities for individual and group volunteerism, foster a greater sense of community among the firm, and support our local and broader communities.
External Impact
The Foundation is a model for community relations, service, and connections. The Guytons and other members of the Foundation have had many opportunities to share their success with other companies and law firms seeking guidance to create similar programs.
There are many examples throughout the Foundation’s history of the “power of one”: that each person can make a lasting impact.
Several projects throughout the Foundation’s history illustrate the power of one individual inspiring others:
A legal assistant at Holland & Hart was inspired to act when she heard an NPR news feature about the plight of students in the West Tallahatchie School District, Mississippi. The legal assistant galvanized other members of the firm to help support the students, an effort that has continued for 20 years.

Legal secretary Janet Elder worked at the firm for 30 years and for decades volunteered countless hours at the assisted living facility Lennox House, including coordinating an annual Thanksgiving Pie Reception and Holiday Party. Janet brought the project to the Foundation, and the rest was history. For 20+ years, members of the Denver office have carried on the annual holiday traditions—baking pies, collecting funds for small holiday presents, and visiting residents—and taken on other projects to support Lennox House.
“
“
“Pay It Forward” is another central tenant of the Foundation: that individuals and organizations served by the Foundation will be inspired to help others in their community.
A notable example of the Pay It Forward philosophy is a Foundation initiative of the Cheyenne office known as the Friday Food Bag Program. Started in 2007 to provide food to students in need, the program was so overwhelmingly successful that in 2010 it expanded into a communitywide project and nonprofit known as the Friday Food Bag Foundation (FFBF). Today, the FFBF delivers bags of nutritious and non-perishable food to more than 1,000 students in Laramie County who otherwise would go hungry.
For all Foundation programs, we stress the importance of paying it forward. When we finish a project helping others, we hope they can in turn, when they’re able, go out and help others too.

ANNUAL HOLIDAY PROJECTS
Since 2002, the Mississippi Project has supported the West Tallatchie School District by annually donating funds for one scholarship for a promising student and two recognition awards to teachers based on recommendations from the community. Members of the Foundation’s board have visited the School District several times to meet teachers, students, and school administrators and see firsthand the impact of the Foundation’s support.

Since 2019, the Foundation holds its annual firmwide school supply drive to help support community schools and partner organizations providing educational services. Over the summer, volunteers in ten offices provided back-to-school supplies, clothing, and other goods to students and community members. We are excited to share that the Foundation’s 2022 school supply drive collected more than $19,000 in supplies and monetary donations. We thank everyone who volunteered your time, energy, and donations—you helped support students’ well-being and learning opportunities.

2022 marked Holland & Hart’s 75th anniversary and the firm chose to celebrate by honoring its longstanding value of serving its communities by coordinating a firmwide day of service. During the afternoons of September 15th or 16th, the firm pressed pause on business and encouraged all members of the firm across its markets to participate in a service activity supporting a local community organization. The firm’s planned outdoor activity in Reno was postponed due to wildfire smoke. “It was rewarding to work side-by-side colleagues and know we were making a difference to our partner organizations and the local communities where we live and work,” said Chris Balch, firm chair and Foundation Board member.

Each year around the holidays, the Foundation supports individuals, families, and local organizations through many projects and activities. In 2022, the Foundation provided gift cards to homeless and vulnerable youth, purchased items or donated funds for giving tree programs, sponsored families in need, and filled holiday gift bags with the hope of bringing a small amount of joy and happiness to those less fortunate.
For many years, the Denver office has been fortunate to have former partner and Foundation Co-Founder Sam Guyton and Co-Founder Jean Guyton as “Samta” and Mrs. Claus. In recent years, the annual “Samta” visit expanded virtually to reach children of all ages across the firm. In 2022, Sam and Jean passed the annual holiday magic to Denver partner and Foundation member Sean Hanlon, now known to the visiting families for the event as “Seanta.” Enjoy the photos!

When the Boise office started working on the Field of Honor project at Morris Hill Cemetery four years ago, there was collective agreement among the initial group to continue volunteering on this project until we finished working through all sections of the Field of Honor. That happened this year!
Our crew helped raise and level more than 35 markers earlier this month, bringing our total to 200 markers raised and leveled (and some headstones cleaned along the way) throughout the course of this project! The Foundation’s Reno office members and families were proud to volunteer again this year for the KTMB Great Community Cleanup at Bartley Ranch Regional Park to help restore common areas, replace or add new plants, and remove invasive weeds. The 2022 event involved 23 different sites throughout the community with over 900 volunteers, the biggest event of the year for this local nonprofit.

For this year’s holiday project, the Foundation’s Salt Lake City office supported Volunteers of America, Homeless Youth Resource Center by collecting and donating much-needed winter items, such as sleeping bags, blankets, tarps, socks, gloves, coats, beanies, toiletry items, 24 holiday stockings (filled with gift cards, toiletries, and treats), and much more. This donation helped make a difference in the lives of youths aged 15-22 who are at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness along the Wasatch Front during the cold winter months. A huge thanks to all the volunteers.

As multiple fires raged throughout the Santa Fe region in the spring of 2022, the Foundation's Santa Fe office coordinated a firmwide effort to provide greatly-needed supplies to displaced families and firefighters working the front lines. Over 200 donated items were delivered to the Peñasco High School and Glorieta Conference Center, which housed an influx of displaced families and one location also served as a main hub of support for wildland firefighters. Additionally, $750 was donated to the Santa Fe Fire Department in support of specialized wildfire-fighting needs.
